Let’s start with the title . . . Jellybeans in Space. This is a perfect clue to the unexpected whimsy, the colorful metaphors, the thoughtful reflections, the surprising mating of familiar words in the unexpected partnerships Jan Slepian’s poetry offers. Her intuition, muse, choices took me on a ride that I didn’t want to end. A sharp curve, a dip, a steep hill, a wall, a doorway, all led to the next reflection of an event or experience from her life. Some of my favorite lines are: “the traffic with its clang of rescue”, “closets hide shopping mistakes”, “the sweet liqueur of care”, “I want a balm for heart-sore”, “like the glove of an alien with no hands”, “she leans like a lover on the loins of her walker.” Treat your imagination and your heart to Jellybeans in Space.Product details

Jellybeans in Space Jan Slepian 9781329490345 Books Reviews
Jellybeans grabbed me immediately-- beginning with At 93 which had me in tears and on throughout the collection, Jan Slepian's honest, humor, and willingness to explore topics that most people avoid is truly impressive. It's even more impressive Jellybeans is her initial foray into poetry (at age 90+). Now moving into my 70's, I am truly inspired!
This small book is an amazing achievement by a 94 year old writer who had never written poetry before. The Jellybeans actually occurred but they weren't poems at the time. They were a mess in space but they will always be remembered as immortalized by the poem and the book that they engendered. These poems reflect the writer's view of herself and her universe. Charming and well worth having.

The introduction to this book says it all the writer is "pushing her shoulder against" the world in these poems, bringing reminiscence together with daily living through sharp, accessible metaphor and wise deliberation. I find myself opening this book often--I keep it right on my desk--in order to refresh myself during the day by spending time with this poet's lovely and loving voice.
This is a wonderful collection of poems that tickles the funny bone, touches the heart, and provides much perspective about the challenges as well as the joys of growing old. Each poem reflects Jan Slepian's love affair with language and her imaginative and creative mind. Together with her collection of essays in Astonishment Life in the Slow Lane and How to Be Old A Beginner's Guide it completes a trilogy that will guide me into my later years.
I started making a list of my favorite poems from Jan Slepian's latest literary treat. This one for whimsy; this one for poignant symbolism; this one for laugh-out-loud humor, and this one for the all-too-familiar grief. Then I realized that there was something meaningful for me in every one of them, a universality that spoke to the grandness and the everydayness of life. And a one-time reading was not enough. When you dig below the surface, what treasures you will find! Thank you, Jan.
I love the poignant humor in these beautifully crafted poems, full of rich details and playful metaphors. Jan Slepian offers an insider's perspective of an assisted living home without the pathos and pity we find in so many other perspectives. Her poems are lively and fully engaged in the process of being there fully, relishing the moments of beauty that can be found in the dining hall or on the bike path. This is not just a guidebook for those us headed in her direction but these poems have the potential to brighten the lives of other assisted living residents around the country. Thank you Jan Slepian!
I was Jan Slepian's novel editor for many wonderful years. I was excited to read Jellybeans in Space, since her essays Astonishment, Life in the Slow Lane, was such a surprising success. This book, ostensibly about living in her 90s, but actually so about life, is such a fresh delight. Its poems "What I Will Miss", "So Much to Do", "Nothing Hurts" are nothing short of exuberant, driven by her incredible sense of humor and her even more incredible sense of life and living. Her exquisite details reminds me of the details of the best poets; her perceptions, so original, clearly gathered down a road "less traveled."
