I rarely give a book 5 stars but this series caught and kept my attention, with characters and story lines that threaded despair to joyous contentment and back, over and over. Although there are only 3 novels in this series, it is worth the read. Each book takes place in Poland, a country I began to feel some familiarity with. The characters are complex and colorfully sketched out, emotionally dissected and even their appearance and habits fully colored in. I feel as if I would recognize them on the street. Entanglement (Polish State Prosecutor Szacki Investigates) Whenever Prosecutor Szacki sometimes seems a bit too arrogant or flawed,as did Columbo in the TV series, something happens that brings him back to becoming an optimal human being. It never lasts. He is so hard on others, wanting them to be at their consistent best, yet he lives a live of hills and valleys. Perhaps part of the draw is the depiction of the complex life of a public servant in the bureaucracies of Poland.

"Lives of Others" with a sense of humor, in the rear view mirror (but also in the back seat, with a knife).

The viewpoint character is so simultaneously sloppy-funny and incisively intelligent that it's hard to decide, at any moment, which side is playing. This makes the novel great fun. As it dives into Poland's vicious (and still very dangerous) Sovietized past, the amusement quotient decreases; fortunately, that's only about 25% of the book. Picaresque, but with a point; moderately recommended.
Often things are lost when translating a book from one language to another; this is definitely not the case here! I've read two of this author's books now, and have a third on my Wish List. I imagine it's a combination of a truly gifted author with an equally gifted translator. The main character, State Prosecutor Szacki, is as flawed as any of us is, and his thought processes are shared, which both increases our understanding of the him and his job, and provides some great moments of humor (and frustration). The author's vivid physical descriptions of Warsaw, the bureaucracy, local politics, and the mindsets of people living there are all as important to the story as any of the main characters. I would highly recommend this to any mystery/thriller buff!
The hero, a Polish prosecutor, which is apparently a combination prosecutor and investigator, is absolutely miserable and unhappy and complains ad nauseum about his home, wife, job and city to the point that it just wears you down. And that is between the endless descriptions of different neighborhoods and the hero"s constant arguments with himself whether he should have an affair or not. A saving grace is that the hero is very bright and competent and the case is fairly interesting, although far fetched. The writing is pretty good. I do not recommend this one, when there are so many better mysteries, thrillers, and other literature out there. gcm
I thoroughly enjoyed the structure of this book. Each section deals with a specific day and starts with a random list of events associated with the day - some related to global events, Polish politics and sports results and a summary of the weather conditions in Warsaw. This book highlights the difference in criminal procedure between most European countries and England/USA and is written from the point of view of the public prosecutor who is ultimately responsible for the case. An interesting cast of characters and complex plot added to my enjoyment. Highly recommend this book to those who enjoy thoughtful crime novels.
A murder takes place during a psychiatric therapy session which involves the use of "constellation therapy", a process whereby other participants play the roles of relatives of the individual being helped and which, in an almost mysterious manner, makes the participants take on the personas of the characters they represent. The case is handled by Warsaw prosecutor, Teodor Szacki, who seems to be going through professional and personal problems of his own. To complicate the situation even further, there appear to be links with a murder that took place many years earlier, during the Communist Regime, and may have political undercurrents.
This is a superb read. It was fun to travel the streets of central Warsaw, catching glimpses of a city that I am very familiar with. I never realised that the role of the Public Prosecutor was to actually carry out the investigation, assisted by the police (similar, I am informed, to the French system). As for "Constellation Therapy", I really did think that was some fanciful invention of the author's until I researched it further - amazing! I really couldn't figure out who did it and was driven to the very end with conjectures and suspicions that were not always well-founded.
Teo Szacki, cynical state prosecutor, is investigating a 2005 murder committed after a Family Constellation Therapy session. Family Constellation Therapy rests on the idea that we all have connections with our ancestors, whether we're aware of them or not, and these entanglements with the past are the result of "morphic resonance," actual psychic energy fields analogous to quantum physics. Or something. Physicists beg to differ and refer to this as "quantum quackery."
Because this is Poland, as Szacki investigates, he brushes against entanglements with the past that are not at all metaphysical, dangerous secrets of a police state gone underground with elites reborn as free enterprise capitalists. He understands that being a hero can get him killed. There's a lot of black humor in this book - Szacki can't have an affair because his budget won't allow for it, he walks into an apartment and automatically assesses the occupant's status by calculating the square footage (he himself lives in 170 square feet with his wife and daughter), and the food is bad and the coffee is worse.
