The Sainnites defeated the Shaftali in the war that devastated the balance between the elementals (see FIRE LOGIC and EARTH LOGIC). Whereas victorious General Clement wants a peaceful adjustment in the land her army occupies so her people and the vanquished can recover and prosper and the elementals can get back to the normal logical balance, the Shaftali forge a government seeking peace.
However, not everyone on the losing side wants the end of the war even with the Shaftali G'deon Karis agreeing to terms with Clement. Some of those who lost their vaunted positions of power launch a counter insurgency against the invaders and those they call traitors. Clement's Shaftali lover Seth is no longer just a field doctor as he as a member of the new Council tracks down the assassin who tried to kill Karis and the fire witch Zanja na'Tarwein assumes the water elemental brought her back two centuries to save her world of the future, but failed to give her a means to communicate with her peers two hundred years from now.
The third elemental logical fantasy is a fabulous entry that continues the tale of a world at war that has led to imbalances threatening its' existence. Readers will admire Laura J. Marks ability to move back and forth between her three prime subplots with two superb threads interrelated to the war and its tentative peace while the third even better segment mixes the fire witch with water. This series continues to be one of the best epic fantasies on the market today although the audience should read the previous tales first to see how Clement, Karis, Seth, and others got to this point and to better understand the WATER LOGIC.

I have been enjoying the series tremendously! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because 5 is perfect and very few writers actually deserve a perfect score, but this author is pretty close.
I was very happy to see this book made available on , so I purchased it even though I already owned it. What a mistake! The original text uses an interesting font that seems to have been too much for a scanner to handle (what, it wasn't digital already?). The resulting book contains too many scan errors to count -- we're talking multiple per page here, and they are obviously scan errors (for example, most lower-case y's ended up as v's). Having gone the lazy route, the publisher then clearly couldn't be bothered for even the most cursory review before throwing it out there. This is lazy, greedy, unethical and unprofessional. If you're a fan of Laurie J. Marks, you might think about buying the book, but DO NOT buy the edition!
A++++
The first book in this series is amazing. The second is decent. This one was... Okay..?
No, really. I have nothing against the series as a whole, but this installment was oddly lack-luster to me.
The plot kind of skipped around, and left many things unresolved. At the end of the last two books, I was satisfied putting them down, but Water Logic left too much hanging, despite the typical, triumphant lesbian sex at the end. With no definite date for the last book, you're left without resolution for an indefinite period of time.
The new characters... Don't particularly stick. I love Ocean as much as the next reader, but she was lacking as a character. Masterful, but static. The characters we've come to know and love don't get much exposition.
Overall... Meh. I'll be finishing the series if the last book is ever published, but I don't really expect to enjoy it at this point.
For all of the awesome world-building, racial and sexual diversity, and interesting history... This book still fell flat.
Amazing world building and truly 3 dimensional diverse characters. Love this series, and can't wait for the 4th book!
My only pet peeve is that it is a different size and has a different cover design than the first 2 volumes P
I love this series, and cannot WAIT for whenever the final book comes out. It is lovely to see that Small Beer is also reprinting the first two. happy happy happy
A world where women and men move as equals, where the gender of you partner is unremarkable, and people still find plenty of room for conflict with each other regardless. Yet, at the root, everyone is on the same team, if only they would pause, reflect, and allow movement into knowledge.
