Standard A.C.Clarke. Dated, but nice stories. Probably best enjoyed by long time fans.
I have liked ACC for years. This collection of pulp works is not a collection of his better works. There is the pulp pattern which makes the end too predictable.
I liked the way Mr. Clark builds each story to a surprising conclusion. Some stories did not do this and I did not enjoy those as much. Mr. Clark is one of the top SF authors I have read.
Although the science in some of these stories is dated and the future that he expects does not seem to have come about yet, these stories are from a master story teller that any one will enjoy. I certainly did.
The first Sci-Fi book I read as a young teen was written by Arthur C. Clarke. I was hooked and still enjoy reading Clarke's books - these short stories are no exception. It's too bad he's not around anymore to write more especially with all the changing technologies.
The short stories in the book is up to Arthur Clark's standards. All the stories have interesting endings, not necessarily happy endings. It was hard to put down once you started reading each story.
Although Mr. Clark's prose reads like journalism, this story is highly intriguing because of his tremendous imagination and the scientific details that he was able to provide many decades ago. Similar to 2001 A Space Odyssey, he suggests that advanced beings are out there, and may even pass from time to time near our humble planet. But they are so far above us that we don't understand their motives.
