What fun! The entirety of The Bird Room is easily read in one or two sittings, in that it is approximately 110 pages long. The book is a compilation of 17 stories of varied length covering a variety of topics, all albeit of a macabre nature. Terrific fireside spooky stuff, the tales are in the vein of Edgar Allen Poe shorts. Chad Hofmann has what it takes to move forward with his writing and thrill readers long into the future with his eerie genrè. I hope he does! One of the hallmarks of a good story is that the reader thinks about the book long after finishing. I’ll be thinking about The Bird Room for quite a while! Enjoyable read.

The Bird Room Chad Hofmann Bill Young 9781499379587 Books Reviews

Chad Hofmann has done a favor for us wanting something a bit different; through his collection of short stories in The Birdroom. 17 tales take our interest through several strange and mysterious realties.

The first story ‘The Birdroom’, takes out to what some people want, a pet. In this case the pet wanted is by Eli and it’s a parrot. When getting this parrot Eli nor Jacob his roommate has any idea that this all grey bird will cause problems. What was interesting about this story was the twisting and emerging of the character of Eli. It made the story a bit strange when the twist at the end was too predictable.

Another story is this collection called ‘The Forest’, tells of the legend of the ‘mad child’ who was thought to be different and deadly. Then one boy makes a choice to find out more about this so called creature. In this particular story the merit of the ‘mad child’ is one of regret and no knowing if this child really had a purpose. A tragic yet amazing tale this author weaved.

‘A Beautiful Day’ was one of my favorites out of this collection as it told of a boy who in his heart got satisfaction after a life of torment. It did have another twist at the end, but this one was not foreseen and it made you root for the main character while at the same time saddened by the ending.

While other stories such as ‘Crew MJOP420’ leaves the reader a bit wondering what was being attempted; a science fiction opera story, just a general science fiction story? I was a bit confused and the story left me unfulfilled.

Yet, while there maybe stories like the one above in this book, it is still loaded with rare gems such as ‘The Spiders’. The story tells of kept spiders who cook for their captors. While one feels for the spiders at times, you can also see the depth the characters go to keep the same family life they have always known.

I would recommend picking up this collection, if not to have something a bit different, a bit strange and certainly not fitting the standard mold.
This is a collection of seventeen short stories, along with lines of poetry fused with brilliant illustrations. The stories are unrelated to one another, and range from paranormal to suspense to simply thought-provoking. Two of my favorites are “A Beautiful Day” and “Phone Calls”. “A Beautiful Day” has a great twist ending, while “Phone Calls” places an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation. I also appreciate the sense of irony in “The Survivors”. Also, the stories are very well written and creative. The dialogue is well written, especially because it reads the way real people speak. As a whole, I’d say this book is very well done, and I would recommend it to anyone is a fan of short fiction. I'm looking forward to reading more from Mr. Hofmann.
I really liked this book. All of the stories had a great macabre feel, and I absolutely had to keep reading to know how each ended. Hofmann has a great descriptive voice, albeit with a violent streak. My favorite story in this collection is The Forest, mostly because it seemed to have the most "fantasy" type feel and fantasy is my favorite genre. I also really like the poetry in between the stories, very thoughtful. The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars is that some stories felt "padded" just a little bit, and I was just like "ok I get it, Mary Jane, I get it..." But that's just me.
